Our Approach to a More Thoughtful Business
Making something by hand teaches patience and care — and it makes you think about what's worth making at all. We try to run Skeinvale the same way. We're a small business, and we don't claim to have it all figured out, but we want to be open about where we stand today and where we're headed.
Made to Order, Not Made to Waste
Every Skeinvale piece is printed or embroidered on demand by our trusted production partners in the US and EU, after you place your order, and shipped directly to you from their facilities. We don't mass-produce inventory and hope it sells.
What this means in practice:
- No overproduction. We only make what's actually been ordered, so there's no unsold stock piling up or being thrown away.
- No warehouses full of excess inventory. Our model is built around real orders, not guesswork — a more efficient way to make clothing than traditional bulk retail.
- Less waste by design. Producing on demand is one of the simplest ways a small brand like ours can reduce its environmental footprint from day one.
This is the foundation of how we work, and it's a choice we made on purpose.
Where We're Still Growing
We want to be honest: sustainability is a journey, and we're early on ours. Our packaging hasn't yet been optimized for environmental impact, and we know there's room to improve.
Here's what we're looking into as we grow:
- Packaging materials — exploring recycled, recyclable, or reduced-plastic packaging options
- Shipping efficiency — right-sizing boxes and mailers to cut down on excess material and emissions per shipment
- Supplier partnerships — working toward production partners who share a commitment to responsible manufacturing
We don't want to overstate where we are today, but we're committed to making real progress — and we'll update this page as we do.
Made to Be Kept
Like the pieces you make yourself, our printed apparel is meant to be worn often and kept for years, not tossed after a season. It's a small way to push back against the throwaway side of fast fashion.
A Note From Us
We're a small, independent brand built around a love of yarn and of making things by hand. We don't have a perfect sustainability record, and we won't pretend otherwise. What we can promise is that we're paying attention, making intentional choices where we can, and working to do better — one stitch, and one order, at a time.
